Originally when my husband and I were shopping for a new mattress we visited the T&N showroom and sat/laid on a mattress there. The showroom mattress was definitely much softer than what we got. After 2 years it's still more firm than what I prefer, certainly not like "sleeping on a cloud" and it's certainly not the best mattress I've ever owned.
